Education
S.B. in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology: thesis in Free-Electron Lasers
M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park: thesis in
the time resolution of the ions from a plasma focus machine
Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park: thesis in
the propagation of high-power electron beams through atmosphere, performed at the Naval Research Laboratory in
Washington, DC.
Areas of expertise
I have more than 20 years of experience with electron beams and associated equipment,
including high-voltage power supplies, high-power microwave devices, klystrons, magnetrons,
and ultra-high vacuum systems.
Experience with electron-beam applications for materials treatment:
sterilization of medical supplies, cross-linking, breakdown of molecular bonds, gemstones,
breakdown of contaminants in water such as MTBE, shelf-life extension of food,
and reduction of bacteria in human blood platelets (thrombocytes).
Experience as a Reliability Engineer for various types of equipment, including large semiconductor machines and
electrical power supplies.
Work exprience
I have worked at a 24-hour/day 20 kW electron-beam facility, on electron-beam microscopes, and in the semiconductor
